I did the same thing, except instead of ribs across the top, I put foam deck coring underneath, and glassed. I still have not painted it and it is varnished, but if it pisses me off it gets painted ! It is only a matter of time

Hi All,

A couple of days back, there was some discussion on building or rebuilding
the companionway hatch on one of the older style boats.  I elected to use
my existing hatch as a "core" and go from there.  I recognized that it
would never be salvageable from a "finishing it bright" perspective but
could be painted and be perfectly acceptable to how I use my boat.  Here's
a link to some images with a numeric order...I had the cloth and epoxy left
over from days gone by so there really wasn't much expense involved
compared to building a new one.
