[Public-List] Continued Fitment questions on Boom Vang choice

Good morning friends,

One of the things I like about the gooseneck track is that when the mainsail
is doused, the whole boom drops to the bottom of the track, thereby putting
load on the preset topping lift (in mini form just as yards do in sailing
ships). When the sail is set, the lift is slack. I never have to touch it,
although we¹ve got it rigged through a block at the masthead down to a cleat
on the mast. In effect it¹s a light secondary main halyard, which we¹ve
actually used once during a race when the main halyard broke.

And how did it break? A well meaning friend had wrapped tape around the
nicropress securing the wire eye to the shackle. We couldn¹t see that the
wire had metal fatigued and was holding on by fewer and fewer strands... One
day in heavy air it broke. We pulled down the sail, put the topping lift on
the head, than hauled it up again. 1/4² line isn¹t the greatest for a
halyard but we finished the race.
