Thanks for the input, everyone! Mo' data points:
The reduction gear on the Volvo is 2.37:1 according to the Maintenance
Manual.
The Previous Owner told me, when (not before) I was there picking up the
boat, that under power she made "about 3.5kts". This surprised me; I would
have expected (and had planned on, actually, and to my chagrin) to be able
to *average* a 5-5.5kt+ speed without pushing the engine too hard.
He had sent the prop off this spring (2016) to Michigan Wheel to be
calibrated and balanced; the diameter and pitch figures are what is on the
paperwork they gave him.
Under sail alone, the boat accelerated up to over 5-6+ kts quickly and
easily, and the bottom appears clean as far as I can see (fresh paint this
spring also), so I do not think that fouling is an issue.
I *wish* I could get 5kts at only 1100RPM ;), but then that would not be
good for the engine, she wouldn't be working hard enough and as a result
would be coking up her exhaust.
As is, the current combination is clearly wrong; my Ariel, at a bit over
1/2 the displacement of the A30, performs better with a 6hp outboard motor
in the lazarette, with a prop not at all designed for a displacement boat.
I have 2 extra props on my I36 that I am selling, and am hoping one of them
will be a better fit and performer.
Fair winds! :)
