Hello Greg -
After the sending unit for the gauge in the factory installed tank beneath
the cockpit sole went bad, and I realized I couldn't get the tank out to
replace the sender without removing the wheel steering apparatus and the
engine, I installed a tank on the liner shelf inside the port locker. The
main centre tank is about 10 gallons... The saddle tank is 18.
I was concerned about a change in trim, so before doing this I had my two
sons stand on the side deck above where the tank was going to go so as to
assess the effect. They weighed about the same as a full tank. The effect
was only barely noticeable so we went ahead and did it.
The procedure now is to use the saddle tank with it's operational gauge
first...then the centre tank by timing and estimating. I always leave about
one hour's running time in the saddle tank so we have that as a reserve.
I've installed a robust valve by which I can shut off both tanks, or select
one of them. And thereby introduced a new source of misunderstandings on
the part of our crew. If I ask someone to 'switch to tank 2'... I have to
add 'remember put the POINTER of the switcher to #2, NOT THE HANDLE of the
switcher...'
We very much appreciate the increase in motoring range. Having an extra
15-18 hours of motoring range is very useful when cruising, particularly as
it reduces our need to go into towns looking for marinas for refueling.
And that reminds me that I've not written my dissertation on the new prop...
I'll get at that.
