When you say solid fuel heaters, do you mean something like this:

I have one and I love it. But it doesn't keep the boat warm all
night. It's fine for the evenings, when you can feed it with
fuel every half hour. When I go to bed, I need 2-3 comforters and
a wooly hat. This is in the Pacific Northwest, where winter nights are
typically 8C (or 45F if you're from the US, Liberia or Burma).
I mostly burn chunks of prestalogs, but also coal.
