Good point Don –
I’ve got a friend who is in the habit of sailing with the tiller nearly vertical. That’s a bad habit both from the point of view of loss of leverage but mostly because of the issue you describe below.
And all that reminds me of another friend who sails a full keeled boat, although not an A30, who has nearly five degrees or so of play in his rudder head. He doesn’t care. I guess one of the secrets of finding happiness and contentment is being able to decide what one is going to let get under one’s skin, but I’d have a hard time putting up with that. Steering is the most intimate connection a sailor has with his/her boat… it should be good!

in a state of depression due to the return of winter. Temperature here in Midland Ontario was +14C a few days ago… -10C again last night. I know winter always gives one last blast in March, but….

Much of the problems of the tiller head wear arise because skippers hold the
tiller too high. If the arms of the H bracket on the tiller are held above
the tiller head, then all the torque is on the tabs and bolt holes at the
aft of the tiller head and this torque is too much for the bronze. Two
things happen, first the tabs bend and second the bolt hole gets bigger and
therefore play develops. Once there is play in the bronze holes, things go
from bad to worse. Thus, hanging on to a tiller while standing is not a
good idea. Try to keep the tiller low in the cockpit. This can be helped
with a tiller extension that allows for control at a much higher level while
keeping the H bracket on the tiller head. At least that way, the key in the
shaft takes most of the torque.

Hi,
No I haven't contacted Edson yet. I haven't decided if I want to fight for
a refund or an exchange. The fundamental design is flawed however.
All the pressure is on the bolt and the holes it goes through. In the old
one,
the pressure is on the inside of the arms of the tiller part pushing on the
sides of the part attached to the rudder stock. I'm going to take it to
a machinist who has looked at in the past. He suggest welding on material
and the machining it back to fit, but suggested that since it would cost
almost as much as a new part, I might as well buy a new part.
