From your description, I'm guessing you have an ElectroGuard or Canada
Metal zinc
(http://alberg30.org/maintenance/MechanicalPropulsion/Zincs/)? Wouldn't
it be possible to replace the zinc-nut (which the screw threads into)
while in the water?
