[Public-List] Broken tack attachment

Hello Marcelo -

If you’re worried the screws may be corroded and that they may break… better it happen while you’re working on it than at sea.

If you break one, then drill and tap a new one just over from the old one (if you can’t get the corpse of the old one out)

And here’s a thought… our Voyager Self Steering Vanes are all-aluminium but for fasteners. When they’re going into cast aluminium, as some of them do, we bed them in waxy grease to inhibit corrosion as time goes by. We use an expensive machinist’s compound for this… but you might use the waxy grease the comes as a donut for sealing toilet installations. Those are cheap, and I’ve been told work nearly as well. Wipe the waxy stuff onto the threads of your screws before driving them into the fitting.

I am also thinking of a SS strap or tang going around the whole thing with holes at the top to accommodate a bolt going through the tack shackle and reefing hooks.

If there is enough material in the thickness of the casting before you get to the inside cavity where the furling gears are you can drill and tap holes and mount a SS strap to the top of the casting. Depending on how you arrange the strap you might end up having to use a twisted shackle. > > Originally the raised protrusion with the hole in it was a simple way to make the casting. Now that is gone almost anything will suffice. You could probably lash the main tack to the boom with line. A SS strap/fairlead should work fine if you have at least a 1/4" of thickness to tap into. Use a fine thread machine screw and coat with anti corrosive gel when installing screws. You can do this on the boat in place...……..no need to try and locate a welder. If you desire the original appearance then have a competent Al welder make an eye plate and weld it on where you wish. For the welding process you might want to disassemble the gear box and just provide them the empty casting...………..so as not to mess up the gears/bushings inside the gear box. > Michael #133 > > On August 6, 2018 at 6:52 PM "Marcelo D. It broke across the hole where the shackle pin passed through. This tack attachment is at the top of the large cast aluminum fitting at the front of the boom that attaches to the circular stainless flange of the roller furler mechanism. Any ideas on how to deal with this is appreciated. > > >> Marcelo > > >> #441 > > >> _______________________________________________ > > >> These businesses support your Association: > > >> http://www.alberg30.org/store/A30supporters.html > > >> Please support them. > > >> _______________________________________________ > > >> Public-List mailing list > > >> Public-List at lists.alberg30.org > > >> http://lists.alberg30.org/listinfo.cgi/public-list-alberg30.org > > > > > > _______________________________________________ > > > These businesses support your Association: > > > http://www.alberg30.org/store/A30supporters.html > > > Please support them. > > > _______________________________________________ > > > Public-List mailing list > > > Public-List at lists.alberg30.org > > > http://lists.alberg30.org/listinfo.cgi/public-list-alberg30.org > > > > _______________________________________________ > > These businesses support your Association: > > http://www.alberg30.org/store/A30supporters.html > > Please support them. > > _______________________________________________ > > Public-List mailing list > > Public-List at lists.alberg30.org > > http://lists.alberg30.org/listinfo.cgi/public-list-alberg30.org
