One thought I have is buying a 3/4 inch X 1/8 inch tang of appropriate length to surround the groove and then bend them 3/4 inch from the ends to create ears that I can drill for a pass through bolt through the original now partially broken off bolt hole. The bolt would have the shackle in the middle and the 2 reef hooks on each side. As I torque the bolt, the tang would then tighten around the groove like a clamp around a hose.and the ears would support the bolt in the original hole. To me this would create a very sturdy and non movable point of attachment.

By the way Gordon, I am presently reading N by E so its funny you mention the Newfoundland coast in your story.

Being a Canadian I was quite struck by the nonchalant way you described the large alligator who lives in the channel near your dock… Me: “is it large enough to be dangerous?” You: “Oh I suppose so, we just keep track of where he is, he usually stays on the other side”. Then later while we were sailing out in the open… Me: “Ah Dan, is that a big log in the water over there?” You: “Ah, no, I think that’s the alligator, so he’s out here today….”

Official: “how will you know when we reach the turning point in the channel?” Skipper (intent on building the fear he could see in his guest’s demeaner) “Oh we listen for Clem’s dog…Clem lives on the point and his dog always barks when a ship is coming by”. The visitor spends the next half hour peering intently into the fog… then …. a dog’s bark is heard. “There it is! I just heard it!” he shouted to the skipper. The skipper listens to the next bark, then shakes his head and says “Nope, that’s not Clem’s dog”. The story goes that the visitor nearly filled his pants,...

My original tack attachment also handled the reefing hooks on both sides of the tack shackle. I would think we could arrange a place the hooks into the strap as well.

It looked like a good location and application for a dyneema soft shackle so I made one up to fit my boat and it seems to work just fine. The “groove” in the fitting keeps the shackle in position without the need for the raised aluminum pin fitting. I live in Mandeville but will be in New Orleans tomorrow, if you text me (504-234-9011) the location of your boat I could drop by it tomorrow around 2:00pm and install the shackle on your boom. Then you could decide if it is a permanent or temporary fix. I use dyneema soft shackles in dozens of places on my boat and have never had a failure or problem with any of them.
