Right on Rod,

When I first bought SURPRISE, I put two pad eyes in the forward part of the forepeak bulkhead, low down.  However that bulkhead is purely cosmetic and really wouldn’t withstand any particular load, so I set things up so the bitter end won’t fit up through the deck.

In extremis…. if the whole length ran out and the yacht pulled up short against it… the knot would have to tear up through the deck, removing the windlass bolted over the hole with big mahogany pads on both sides… I think that’s about as secure as I can make it.

#426 Surprise

PS on a happier topic, on the last day of our cruise earlier this month we were motoring home just east of Giant’s Tomb Island and saw what appeared to be an Alberg 30 almost bows on motoring toward us.

As we closed with them, I became sure it was an A30 and altered my course to pass him close. (dark anodizing on the thickish mast, single spreaders, proper shippy bow, low freeboard…etc)  The other boat noticed and promptly altered to keep their distance as we passed… I altered again… they altered away again… I altered toward again… they altered sharply away and I saw them stand up with ‘concerned’ body language… then suddenly they recognized us as a fellow A30 and they started waving energetically.

It was Serguei in #602 looking really sharp and well looked after.   We exchanged messages later…but I’ll say again ‘hey Serguei, sorry I looked like I was intent on ramming and boarding for a while there!  Your boat looks great.'
