Agreed. Using the furler as a "furler", not as a "reefer" is the way to go.
With roller furling, its easier to go out single handed, which is the way
that I sail nearly all the time.
Flaking a genoa alone, at least the way I do it, results in a lot of back
and forth from luff to leech to luff
to lay dow the flakes and smooth them out. Do this each year when I
remove the sail for the winter
and would NOT want to do it every time I sail. Flaking the main each time
if enough flaking for me
and the main is much easier to flake as the slides hold the luff in place.
So use the sail on the furler either fully deployed or fully rolled up.
Thinking that two luff grooves in the furler goes a bit of the way to prove
this. If a sail is hoisted on the furler
and connected to the top swivel, I dont see how it would be possible to
raise another sail in the empty groove
and then douse the sail connected to the top swivel. Which means that when
planning to use both grooves,
the halyard must connect directly to the head of the sail, in place of the
halyard connecting to the top swivel
and connecting the head of the sail to the top swivel. So there is no
capability to roll a sail when planning to
use both grooves for sail changes.
Guess that means:
- drop the headsail,
- disconnect the head from the top swivel
- connect a downhaul to the top swivel
- connect the halyard to the head of the sail
- hoist the headsail
- switch headsails, using a second halyard to raise the new headsail
- when finished, drop the headsail, connect the halyard to the top
swivel, connect the head to the top swivel
- and now the roller furler is back in action
