Hi, Greg,

First of all, where are you located? Perhaps another Alberg owner could
take a look at it with you.

I don't think I've got any photos of the drivetrain, itself, on the
website, but I'll try to describe things as well as I can. Be aware that
there can be some variances from boat to boat, especially if a previous
owner has done work in that area or replaced anything.

On the back end of the transmission, there should be a flange attached
to the driveshaft. A coupling on the forward end of the propshaft (see
https://www.getaprop.com/image/cache/catalog/Blog/walter%20solid%20shaft%20coupling-500x500.jpg)
should be bolted to that. This coupling is generally held onto the prop
shaft by a key (you can see the keyway in that photo) to keep it from
turning, and three or four bolts (or setscrews) to keep it from sliding
aft. Here's another photo
(https://www.generalpropeller.com/image/cache/catalog/Shaft1-500x500.jpg)
that shows the coupling flange mounted on the prop shaft.

From your description, I would guess the bolt threads have corroded
off. Hammering them back in does not sound like a viable solution to me.

Also, it's very important that the engine, the shaft, and the cutless
bearing all be lined up very precisely. If not, then the shaft will wear
the cutless bearing, at best, or bend into a pretzel at worse. The
latter can actually pull the engine off its beds.
