[Public-List] OT: "Gackle your cables"

Jonathan;
       " Gackle" does not appear in my 744 page " Sailor's Word Book" ,  however, when I checked the definitions for " cable " they listed " Cackling or Keckling " was the process of splicing two cables together to extend the length.  Does this make sense in the context of your story ?
My tired old eyes sometimes have trouble distinguishing  C  and  G  in certain fonts.   Is that a possibility ?

What does it mean?
Re-reading the Aubrey Maturin series and this phrase is used on page 326 of
_The_Far_Side_of_the_World_ book 10 (

Dont find the phrase in _A_Sea_of_Words_ (
https://www.amazon.com/Sea-Words-Third-Companion-Seafaring/dp/0805066152)
or in other references that I have.

Anyone know the phrase?
