Yeah, the next time I'm speccing out a battery bank for an electric
motor, I'm pretty sure I'll go with lithium. When I was making the
decision this time around, I was assuming that a burning lithium ion
battery would be a metal fire (class D), and damn near impossible to
extinguish. Since installing my current lead-acid bank, I've learned
that lithium battery fires are generally safe to treat as class A or C.
And yeah, LiFePO has something like 3x the capacity for the same weight,
in addition to being able to put out its full rated current pretty much
right down to complete discharge -- that's like a 20x improvement in
range the the motor's running at full tilt.
While I've already pretty much figured out that I like to stick to about
3kts on the electric, and can get to a harbour without wind from pretty
much anywhere in Lake Ontario at that speed, on the batteries I've got,
I'm pretty sure I'd have to switch to LiFePO in order to get to
Smugglers Cove under power.
