Don,
 I think the Yanmar has a reduction transmission, vs the A4 direct drive
one.  The output on the transmission spins opposite of the crankshaft
rotation.  Our Westerbeke is the same way.

On the subject of free wheeling props we alway put ours in reverse to stop
the rotation.  But I understand that is not recommended with some
transmissions.
