[Public-List] sail arch

I actually got back from working on the solar project and made significant progress. I will have to take some pictures and send them to George to upload.
Some of the highlights:
1. I purchased a Renogy monocrystalline 50 W panel from Renogy together with 20 ft of their 12g solar wire with the MC4 fittings already installed on the ends.
2. The panel is mounted on the stern rail on center so that I can pivot it at least in one direction. I am lucky in that the stern of the boat points directly south when in her slip.
3. I bought a pair of Magma BBQ mounts to mount the panel to the stern rail. These are very secure and have a pivoting mechanism which allows you to mount the panel to the curved stern rail. They are adjustable so I loosen the handle and can pivot the panel.
The mounts are item T10-580 from Magma and are called Dual horizontal rail mounts.
4. The wires are run through the deck using a Blue Sea Systems Cable Clam after isolating the screw holes from the core with epoxy.
5. From the stern lazarette, the wires run along the port locker to the solar controller mounted on the bulkhead between the locker and the main cabin on the locker side. I decided to add a toggle switch on the positive lead coming from the panel to have the option of disconnecting the panel if I need to service the system.
6. The controller is a Morningstar SunSaver Duo. It allows each of my two batteries to be charged independently with the option to select each to receive 50% of the charge or the start battery to receive 10% and the house to receive 90%.
7. I purchased the optional remote temperature sensor because the temp at the batteries will differ from where the controller is located. This is just an extra lead going from the battery compartment under the floor board to the controller. You can also purchase a remote display module that will give you a visual on the state of the batteries and charge. I may do this in the future.
8. From the controller, there are two 12g duplex wires going to each battery. You must add a fuse on the positive lead of each wire within 12 inches of the battery terminal. I used 5 amp fuses since the panel’s max output is around 3amps.
One difficulty I encountered was running the duplex wires from the controller to the battery compartment. For this, I made a 1inch hole through the bottom of the engine liner at the aft end of the engine by the A4 transmission box and then ran the wires underneath the engine liner to the battery compartment. I used flexible plastic conduit around the wires to keep them protected from chafing.
And that’s it in a nutshell.
