I could not have found the leak on mine without removing it from the cutlass bearing housing and very closely examining the pipe threads which had a very tiny crack. Daniel Swords #525

Gerard,

I find it very difficult to determine the location of a leak with the 
boat out of the water. Get a good flashlight and take as close a look as 
you can. Look for wet spots and then look above them. Be patient.

In my case, I had failed to completely caulk the upper bolt holding the 
cutless bearing housing. I saw a water droplet on the end of that bolt.

Sometimes I've used my phone to take videos of things I couldn't see 
otherwise.

When you've found the general location, clean it as well as you can and 
wrap a paper towel around it. See where the damp spot is.

Tim Lacky is a good man. Good advice, good techniques, excellent
documentation. I don't know how one man can get that much done.

Get the g10 tube that has the id that is the same as the cutlass bearing
od. Leave enough of the tube exposed beyond the stern post for a pair of
set screws to capture the cutlass bearing. I set the new tube in thickened
West System. You'll need to have a thoroughly clean shaft alley for the
glue bond.
