Dear Albergers,

One of the projects this winter is replacing the stuffing in the stuffing box.  To improve access to the stuffing box, I removed the waterlift muffler, a Vetus item, located below the cockpit sole above the stuffing box.  In doing so, the heavy duty exhaust hose did  not come off the iron/steel threaded pipe segment but rather the pipe unscrewed from the rest of the exhaust.

Found that the connection was sealed with a red, rubbery material.  Don't
believe that I've ever seen such before.   A photo of the material is at

It?s probably some sort of pipe dope. I use RectorSeal which was recommended by a well-respected mechanic on rec.boats years ago. Look for it in the plumbing department of your hardware store.

Looks like high temp silicone RTV.   I have used that and a high temp
thread sealant without issues.

I have Bostic Never-Seez anti-seize/sealant that I used when I had to replace the iron pipe pieces going from my exhaust manifold to the standpipe muffler. You?re welcome to borrow it.

Lately I have been binge watching Road Kill Garage and was pleased to 
hear one of the gearheads on the show does what I do- don't seal things 
up, make it so they come apart,in the future. I never seize everything, 
including hoses. Dulchich (the gear head), uses grease, but same thing.
Mike L's suggestion is a good one.
