I doubt the keel cavity would be wide enough to fit batteries. I also don’t
think you could get the ballast out.
We have been electric since 2012 on into the blue. We used electric yachts
system and it has worked great. The only things we had to do was change the
gearing and that is because I gave him the empty displacement of 9000 lbs.
When I told him it was closer to 11000 he sent us a different gear.
We use 3 Blade 13by 12 prop. I may get that cut down to 12 by 12 just
because one has to remember not to use full rudder throw or it touches the
rudder.
Batteries. We have 2 banks of 100amp hours each. So 8 batteries as it is a
48 volt system. 2 are in the original location 2 are forward under the
floor in the forward compartment.
2 more are under the sink area and 2 under the cooler by cutting the cooler
floor and covering them with wood.
The boat sits a lot closer to her lines that Albert intended. I think she
sails even better.
We used lifeline Agm batteries and only last year noticed a drop in
capacity. Savings up to replace them with Lithium. Remember that because of
Puckett effect a hundred amp hour battery is only 100 at a 20 hour
discharge rate. By running both packs together we reduce Puckett effect and
on flat water we can cross Lake Ontario at 3 knots and have about 40% left
when we tie up.
We also use chargers that charge each battery individually as this keeps
them balanced.
