>> 1) Raked back or forward?  Forward rake is rarely a good thing; only specific classes in specific situations use it.  Alberg 30’s can benefit from slight aft rake   A small amount of weather helm is good.  Too much is inefficient and aggravating.
>> 2) How/where is the 10-12" or 4-5" measured? This is measured at the masthead, however, as one may imagine it is inconvenient to measure this up there so rake is adjusted by feel.  Raking the mast aft has the effect of ‘rotating’ the sail plan aft, thereby adjusting the centre of its area aft.  This increases weather helm. Raking the mast forward rotates the sail plan forward, moving the centre of area forward and so reduces weather helm.   The amount of weather helm a boat has is directly proportional to the health of the mainsail.  The more ‘blown out’ or otherwise out of shape the main is, the more weather helm the boat will have.  This is because a disproportionate amount of power is being developed in the after part of the sail plan.  A worn out main will also produce more heeling vector than forward thrust, and more heel means more weather helm.

To rake the mast aft, one loosens the forestay and fore lower shrouds, then tightens the backstay… resetting the forward lowers once a bit of rake has been induced.   To put it simply, to rake the mast aft, loosen rigging which would prevent this movement, and tighten rigging which pulls it in the direction you want it to move.
