[Public-List] [EXTERNAL] Re: boom height for doger

Interesting discussion here. From my perspective, when sailing, the boom should be at the bottom of the gooseneck track so that the heeling moment produced by the main is reduced. The Dodger and Bimini should be designed accordingly. At anchor, the boom should be at the top of the gooseneck track held there by the stop-slider. This is done just to keep the boom out of the way.

A tall person might opt to make a different trade decision between the healing moment and standing head room under the Bimini and Dodger. I’m 5’5”.

I always put the topping lift on before lowering the main to keep it off the dodger .

When hoisting, the main must always be fully up and the gooseneck be allowed to rise, so that when fully sheeted down the boom is not on the dodger.

This depends on the cut of your main . Mike Lehman had his main cut high so he could have a higher dodger. I mounted his dodger a few inches lower on Rinn Duin.

As soon as I can I will measure from the top of the slider to the bottom of the boom
1) with main stowed
2) with main hoisted

And also measure top of slider to top of dodger.

If Paul can do the same it would be interesting. To see differences.

Yes…. The boom must be in its stowed at rest position
