[Public-List] [EXTERNAL] boom height for doger

Hello Matthew… well it’s pretty tough to get good shape on the main that way.

Correct setting involves hoisting the main as high as it will go… the gooseneck will rise on the track considerably. One makes down the halyard on it’s cleat, then using the downhaul on the underside of the gooseneck’s car, pull the tack of the sail back down to adjust for appropriate tension on the luff of the sail. The gooseneck will come down something short of the bottom of the track.

If the gooseneck car can be pulled down to the bottom of the track, then either the halyard wasn’t hoisted properly all the way up, or the sail is misshapen or too long in the luff.

The cost of not doing this is a poorly setting main. The manifestations of a poorly setting main are more heeling for a given wind speed and less forward thrust. Neither is good. And more heeling creates a vicious circle.

Higher angles of heel result in more weather helm. A poorly shaped main developing more heeling force rather than forward thrust also increases weather helm by imbalancing the rig (overpowering aft) More weather helm means slower sailing… Less efficient main means poor windward performance… poor windward performance can be life and death if one is in a bad spot.

It’s like having a car whose steering alignment is out of whack all the time… much better to tune the bias out and not deal with the problems that come with misalignment.

Gord

The Dodger and Bimini should be designed accordingly. At anchor, the boom should be at the top of the gooseneck track held there by the stop-slider. This is done just to keep the boom out of the way.
