One thing to be aware of is that Whitby often didn't use proper hose 
barbs. More bodging the hose over a threaded pipe end, which have 
slightly different outside diameters in that weird NPT standard than the 
hoses have inside diameters. It's something like putting a 1 1/2 hose 
over a 1.66 inch pipe.

I've done it, by dipping the hose end in boiling water than than putting 
over the pipe end while it's still warm and soft, but it's not the best 
procedure.
