Hi Stephen… I’ve worried about my wiring too… and it turns out with good reason. Well it’s all out now and the process of installing new is happening.
Way back in my wooden boat days, I was sitting aboard one afternoon reading a book in the cockpit at the club. I caught a faint odour of hot plastic… it got stronger rapidly. I followed the smell and found an electrical short in the wiring in the bottom of the hanging locker.
What coordination of lucky circumstances caused me to be aboard when that happened? I had switched nothing on, had moved nothing… I was just lucky to have been there when those two wires which had been gently chaffing each other for a few decades, finally made contact and got very hot.

According to one insurance table I read once (maybe on BoatUS???), fires caused by bad wiring are the leading cause of pleasure vessel loss. The factory installed wiring from Whitby was very firmly substandard. I was appalled to find wirenuts for example. I think at this point there is no original wiring left on my boat, red or otherwise. I hope so anyway, because the last bit of wiring that I know was original I found by noticing that was disturbingly warm to the touch.
