Greg - Most sail boats do not have a gooseneck track. The position of the boom is fixed for best performance. When fiberglass boats came in during the 1960s there was a lot of marketing competition among various builders of this size boat. Customers valued standing headroom in the cockpit and down below. The gooseneck track was the solution to the former. It was fitted with a slide and plunger to hold the boom at the top of the track when at anchor. Under sail the boom should be at the bottom for minimum healing moment. A single downhaul line and small cleat was fitted to keep it there. If one wishes to adjust the luff tension, then that is done with the halyard or with a Cunningham (if one is fitted).

Wondering how and if people use the track for their sailing vs
docked/moored/etc. Is it there for various sized sail one main own or some
other feature that was important that I am missing?

Cheer

Hello Greg,

The gooseneck track is an important part of setting the mainsail. When the sail is furled, the gooseneck drops down to the bottom stop of the track. When hoisting the main, you haul away until the halyard is all the way up, the last foot of hoisting picks up the boom and gooseneck to some point along the short track. Once the halyard is secured, you use the downhaul shackled to the loop on the bottom of the gooseneck casting to pull the sail down setting good luff tension (or not, if you don?t want more tension).

There should not be various sized mains? all should be built to class specifications.

Greg,

When we got the dodger, we fixed the gooseneck at the top of the track
to clear it when the topping lift was on and the main down. We switched
to using a cunningham to adjust the luff tension, instead.

It seems to work well-enough for us.
