Matt has reminded me of the other thing I tried, which is shimming. I tried stainless washers, but they were too hard and wore into the bronze. I tried plastic washers, but they were too soft and didn't last long. Then I made copper washers cut from a thin sheet. They worked the best. They lasted a year before wearing out, but didn't cut into the surrounding bronze.
