I'd like to offer a counter point of view to " No need for all chain or windlass."I'm 57, single handed cruising in Mexico. This means I'm anchoring in places I've never been and only have the guide books descriptions to go on. I've been sailing for a while but there is no way I can sail off the anchor in crap conditions and retrieve an anchor manually. I want to be in the cockpit, at the engine controls, when I make that exit. If the engine is dead, I'll sail. If the windlass is gone, I'll release the rode and come back for it.The second reason I went all chain is my "neighbors." A majority of boats down here seem to run all chain, put out minimum scope, and they like to anchor a bit close. Thought exercise: Two boats put out the same amount of scope. One all chain and the other mostly nylon. In light conditions the all chain boat will swing much less than the boat with mostly nylon. Imagine the arguments that can ensue when the boat with the nylon rode gets close to or hits the other boat. Please feel free to argue that it ain't right. I don't care to deal with it.Regards,GregS/V Ayla #43Sent from my Galaxy
