Russ, thanks for the input.  I really only need depth but thought that
the information the fish finder provided was interesting and cheaper.
My Alberg had an old analog depth sounder with the transducer in an oil
bath under the forward part of the port bunk also.  I used to have a
similar installation in an Acadian yawl 30 ft ., which is a similar hull
to an Alberg and it worked well for years.  The old sounder on the
Alberg doesn't work anymore and there are no parts available.  It seems
from the input I have had that I will stick with a depth sounder since
they seem to do the depth job better than the fish finder.
