place a bale on the boom about 4 or 5 feet aft of the mast.  Then run a
reversed luff tackle from the bale to the foot of the mast with the bitter
end at the mast side and a cam cleat on the block.  This will give you a 4:1
purchase to hold the boom down.  Don't put the bitter end on the boom or it
will be hard to adjust while running downwind.
