[Alberg30] Ballast

Hi Pete,

I find the Alberg 30 exceptionaly tender. I like the boat a lot, but am not happy with her ability to carry sail when I'm trying to drive her to windward in a blow. I can live with poor light air performance, but not being able to carry enough sail to claw upwind is not good. My previous boat (sorry, here I go again) was a Danish built wooden Folkboat - she was slow in light stuff, but incredible upwind. I would like to try to tweak my Alberg toward an improvment in that area.

The Folkboat was also tender for the first 10-15 degrees, but she then "stuck", and with a double reefed main and "blade" jib would go like hell without further sail reduction even in 30kt+ winds and the sort of waves you'd expect. (I get nostalgic, but should remind myself that in those conditions she'd be going under every second wave, the cabin ports would be leaking, water would be pouring into the bunks through the mast collar, etc) The Alberg, on the other hand, doesn't stick until she gets to about 20-22 degrees of heel, and that in less than 20 knts of wind, and at that point the leeway is becoming heartbreaking. So; I am looking at flatter sails... a deeper second reef, and monkeeing with the ballast....

  Gord,

Interesting problem; my main complaints would be over poor light air performance. What's the nature of your heavy air problem?

    Hello Gang,

As some of you may recall, I have moaned in the past about being a little dissapointed at my A30's ability to carry sail in a blow. I am in the process of crunching numbers to determine the benefit of adding lead ballast beneath my liner pan under the cabin sole. Anybody else gone down this road?
