There is a simple solution, although rather old, to retracting Lazy Jacks, it also reduces the chances for chafe and is quite cheap.

Put small cheek blocks about a foot above the spreaders (one on each side). Then run a piece of 1/4 inch nylon through each one, these lines should be long enough to belay both ends on a cleat on the mast. Tie bowlines in the after side of this line. Rig the after legs in the normal fashion, inverted "V" running through the bowlines. The bowlines serve as blocks, but have no hard surfaces. The extra length of line running up the mast and through the cheek block is long enough to let you: Slack the lazy Jacks to prevent chafe; Lower the portion above the boom so nothing will hang up when raising the sail; and Let you get rid of the Lazy Jacks when you want to set a large awning.

Materials needed:
      2 Small Cheek Blocks
3 Strap Eyes and screws(go under the boom for rigging the lines there)
      2 Small Cleats
      About 100 feet 1/4 nylon.
