[Alberg30] More Stuffiing Box Hose Replacement Questions

Tom: I (of course) have no Idea what was done with your boat--but, here was
the situation with mine (#219) this past year.

1. The sealant was factory installed, about 30 years ago--known then as
thiakol. (If gray in color)
2. There were no rear clamps that I remember. There may have been one.
3. I had to cut some of the sealant away to get the hose loose, using a
farrier's knife--I am told that it is now called a linoleum knife.
4. Mike's comment about the dissimilar diameters of stern tube/stuffing box
is correct. And it is important that you get the proper fit on the stern
tube, with enough purchase for two clamps, side by side.
5. Note that the stern tube is a non-standard size O.D., and hose may be a
special order, depending on how well stocked your supplier is. There are
some ersatz answers if the proper hose diameters for the tube OD are not
available.
6. You can take the stern tube out to fit parts to it, but it MUST be
rebedded--and you run the risk of incompatibility between the sealant that
is already there and the new sealant you use.
7. Make sure that you use the best quality all stainless clamps you can
buy. Doing this work is a pain in the gleutimus maximus--shortcuts and
cheap materials will give you more practice at this than you are likely to
want.
