[Alberg30] Re: wiring

I used butt connectors with shrink wrap and solder that I got from a NAPA store. After stripping the wires and butting them, I heated the shrink wrap with a heat gun and then heated the solder until it melted enough to fuse the two wire ends together. For finishing the wires where they would be attached to the panel, I used the appropriate fitting with the same solder and shrink wrap. All of this has worked well on both boats I have done this on.

Tthis arrangement is strong and dry and, I think, a lot better than crimping the wires.

it is my understanding that the butt connectors and the related fittings for wire ends were originally developed for the auto industry, but they seem to work very well on boats as well.

Hi Gord-

Why is it better to use crimp tools versus soldering connections to the
posts on the panels and other connections?

I'm contemplating a wiring job for next year and would appreciate any
advice such as which wire gage size etc.

Thanks

I replaced 90% of the wiring and all the lights except those inside the
cabin, including a new panel with breakers, new main battery switch,
adding wiring to new instruments, an outlet for a hand-held searchlight,
etc. It cost a couple of hundred dollars with oversize marine-quality
wire and is well worth it. As observed, Whitby used what looks like lamp
wire (zip cord). Maybe it wasn't, but it certainly is over-age by now.
One of the best things I have done to BRIGADOON in terms of reliability
and safety.

Having done that years ago on another boat, I had learned a lot, one
thing being to use crimp tools, not a soldering iron.
