Thanks all for the comments on the Gale sail and storm jibs. On a previous boat, an Islander 36, we were brushed by an off season typhoon in the S. Pacific near Samoa. In that case we ran for a while under a 70% heavy weather jib for a while and then bare poles running downwind. We were doing 6 knots under bare poles. After that experience it was clear exactly what the I36 needed under all conditions. I am still in a quandry how to outfit an A30 since I have never been in those conditions in this type of boat. I have a roller furled 135 genoa which has terrible sail shape when rolled to 90%. It has no foam luff. If I had this sail retrofit with a foam luff would it then have sufficient shape to make upwind headway in say 30 knots of wind? What would a 60 sq ft Gale Sail perform like in 30 knots with a double reefed main? Would I be miserably underpowered?
My thought is to get the 60 Gail Sail and do the foam luff retrofit on the 135 roller genoa. What do you all think of this as a solution for not only gales but strong trade wind sailing (like near Panama) in an A30?
