I thought red oak is a no no in a boat in general...rots where white oak doesn't. Could be wrong.

Anyone else know?

White oak is better, but if you can get your hands on inexpensive red
oak which is not as dense as white will do fine with a couple of coats
of epoxy or(epoxy sealer)and paint over the final coats of epoxy to
prevent UV damage to the epoxy.

Epoxy sealer manufactured by Industrial Formulators soaks into the wood
like lacquer thinner. It is a 50/50 ratio product.

As mentioned in another post, mahogany is fine too.

A lot of old wooden fishing boats in my area have red oak in "em"
because of price and availability!

Good Honduran mahogany would work well, too.
