There shouldn't be any gas smell.  That indicates that the fuel system is
not quite air-tight.  It could be anywhere along the way, though if you've
still got an old steel gas tank that's a likely place to start.

One way is to use three wooden dowels and some nylon screen.  Sew tubes
into the edges of the screen to hold the dowels such that one goes on 
each side of the companionway slide and one goes on (or just above)
the bridgedeck below the companionway.  The dowels hold the screen in
place but allow it to be folded up compactly for storage.
