Randy,

With respect to your question, the shoe is held on with 1/4-20 X 1 inch
bronze screws and should have 5200 or 4200 applied to the shoe when
installed. The gudgeons have the bronze bolts going through the deadwood in
the hull. What will occur is that the bronze fittings will be work hardened
over time and become brittle which will lead to stress cracks in the metal.
There was some coorespondence yesterday concerning stress cracks, I wasn't
sure if this was in the fittings or hull.

Any other questions, please ask most of this has dealt with these same
issues.

Subject: [Alberg30] Rudder

I am running out of time at the yard and after sanding all of the bottom
paint off and inspecting the Gudgeons Middle and Bottom
it appears that the only thing holding the rudder on is marine growth and a
couple of nubs of the screws---
The Middle one has pulled out about 1/2 diameter of the screw---- but
rudder works fine without binding--
I don't know what is between the side of the gugeon-- is it solid and if so
instead of screws I could bolt from side to side-- thoughts?

The bottom one --do the screws go across into itself like the middle or
into something solid in the bottom of the keel --I really need to come up
with a stategy -- will it be necessary to remove the rudder ------- I hope
not -it's not in the time budget and is really hard to do in the water.
Thanks for input Randy #385
