Brian, if I were replacing one, I would NOT use wood. Even if encapsulated,
there is moisture in the wood and over time this can cause problems.  I
would take a piece of hard epoxy board (you can buy scraps at Read Plastics
or make one by laying up pieces of glass on a piece of wax paper) and then
just epoxy the board in place and keep building up with glass and epoxy
until the size you want.  This would make a much stronger and everlasting
repair.  I say epoxy as it is stronger than polyester and the vapors are
less harmful.  If not exposed to sunlight, will last just as long if not
longer.  If exposed to light, paint it to keep the UV destruction from
occurring.  It is not a large enough job for the increased cost to be
significant.
