[Public-list] Ignition wiring...

Two thoughts from someone who spent the winter re-wiring...

First, for added security there are main battery switches available with 
integral locks. This, along with a rubber booted toggle in the cockpit would 
be safe and at least as secure as the original.

Second, on my boat the compass is still in its original cutout and, before 
rewiring, used to deviate when the running lights or spreader lights were on 
because of the unbalanced wiring on the other side of the fibreglass. This 
has been solved with the new wiring which I moved away from the compass. I 
also made sure that each conductor is in close proximity to its return 
conductor to reduce stray magnetic fields. If you move the ignition and 
light switches to the compass cutout you may cause compass deviation 
problems like I was seeing previously.
