[Public-list] Maximum Roach in Mainsail

The fully battened mainsail that came with my boat has too much roach. he
folks at my loft measured it at 26" and say 10-12" is a normal max. for a
monohull. A few years ago they made a mainsail for an A30 and they cut
it with 5" of roach at request of the owner.

I'm going to have a new main made for my boat and I'm wondering how much
roach would be suitable for maintaining decent speed while better enabling a
balanced helm and a more manageable boat in gusty conditions. I use the
boat strictly for cruising, so class rules, etc. aren't a factor.

I'd like to hear about any experiences others have had with various
configurations of mainsails, thanks.
