Hi folks,

I have found out ambitious boat renovation runs in the family.  A friend
wrote me to ask if I was related to Bob Kingsland who has just launched a
50' steel ketch he built form the ground up in his spare time over the last

Turns out he is from the Saint Louis Kingslands but we have common ancestors
several generations back from New Jersey.

Thanks but please don't go to the trouble.  Too many projects ahead of a new
hatch.  Just was wondering if a new frame was required.  FYI, some pics of
my boat attached.  Wish I were as far along as you, but soon....

Dear Roger,

The hatches are Lewmar (ocean rated).  I don't have the dimensions here.
The boat is 60 miles away under at least 6ft of snow.  We are still about 6
weeks away from going to the boat.  I can take the measurements and close-up
pictures then if you are still interested.  The installation is not
difficult except that frames have to be build on the cabin top to bolt the
hatches to.  The hatches require a relatively flat surface while the cabin
top  has a rounded surface.  I built up frames with fibreglass on the cabin
top and fastened the hatches to them.  Again, if you are interested I can
give you more detailed instructions.  

The hatches really improve the air flow.  We took Kilwinning to Caribbean
where air flow was important.  At least for us, they are worth the
investment.

I admired the new hatch forward.  Do you recall the size and manufacturer
and was the install simple?
