Rod... It's easy to remove. I have the same problem some winters. From what 
folks tell me it's from the interior having been painted previously with 
latex. Nevertheless, it's an easy job. Some Tide and a couple of cups of 
Chlorox in a bucket of warm water. I use a rag instead of brush. Gentle 
wiping gets it all. The biggest problem is moving the seat cushions to 
avoid drips and wiping the Chlorox out of your eyes :-)
