It's also worth trying a carbide scraper (dull the corners to protect 
from accidentally "digging in").  Something like a Bahco Carbide 
Scraper is what I mean.

If it works it can go pretty fast, and isn't as potentially toxic as 
sanding with its dust (of course you'd wear a respirator for sanding 
but still it's dusty).  You can catch the chips on a tarp.

Worth a try, in my book.  Then you can choose based on how it goes.
