[Public-List] Rudder Bolts and Rudder Removal.

I have been following this rudder thread.....and for some reason no
one mentions a stuffing box on the rudder shaft.
My A-30 has a stuffing box on the rudder shaft and to my mind if the
stuffing is to tight or has worn a groove on the shaft will prevent
the sliding of the post down. If one disassembles the box and takes
the stuffing packing out then the shaft should drop down. I tighten
my rudder stuffing box a little every 3 or 4 years.

One can also remove the propeller shaft by loosening (removing) the
lock screws from the motor flange (Leave the flange attached to the
engine) and pull the shaft out. You also have to remove the propeller
first....you hit the propeller on the middle of the hub with a hammer
and it will just fall off. The propeller nut has to be moved away for
the propeller a few threads first so as to stop the loose propeller
from falling onto the ground and breaking.
Best wishes for the New Year and Happy Sailing Season for 2010
