I too have heard the same comments re: Kubota based marine conversions. I addition, most of the Kubota maintenance parts can be purchased from the Kubota tractor dealerships for less than the marine stores. More sources for parts = more competition = lower cost. Also I thought that the Beta was Kubota based as well.

Fo my moneys worth anything that is Kubota based is good - that includes the 
Universal, westerbeke, nanni diesel. The Kubotas are great little engines 
and I think less problems than the yanmars, volvos etc.

Hello Fellow Albergers! 
My 1966 Alberg 30, Sabrina, has had a mortal failure of her 80s universal 
diesel.  Now I'm faced with the dilemma of how to repower her.  The mechanic 
I talked with deals in Westerbeke and is steering me that way.  What modern 
diesels have others used?  Is Yanmar better?  Others?  Help please!  This is 
going to cost a bilge full of gold coins to fix and I want to make the best 
choice so that Sabrina will be around another 50 years.
