[Public-List] Painting the prop?

David & Don,

I also have used Petit's product, but I have now switched to a can of "Cold Galvanizing" which is available in any hardware store. I believe that George Dinwiddie had suggested it. Both the Petit & the Cold Galvanizing are 93% zinc. The Petit cost me about $32.00. The Cold Galvanizing cost about $ 7.00.
Before using these products (on the Eastern Shore of VA, in Onancock Creek), I tried several other things, including bottom paint. Nothing worked. I would have a basket of barnacles around my prop after 3 months. With the Cold Galvanizing I used last season, I never had to clean the prop, or notice any degradation of boat speed. Prior to applying the Cold Galvanizing, I made sure that the prop was clean, sanded it lightly, and wiped it down with acetone.

I use Pettit "Zinc Coat Barnacle Barrier" and have been very pleased with it.
The paint film is 93 percent zinc, smooth and hard, stuff doesn't like to grow on it and what does cleans off easily. Comes in a rattle can and requires no primer, very easy to apply.

Just wondering how you treat your prop as far as antifouling paint goes?  My prop gets barnacles on it fairly quickly no matter what I try, even though the rest of my boat stays pretty clean (well, except the bottom of the keel.  I can't keep bottom paint on there either).  Do you guys use epoxy then bottom paint?  straight paint?

Thanks.
