[Public-List] Rudder post stuffing box

Hi Bernard,

The first time I repacked mine was while in the water. I had my stuff
ready and cut following these excellent directions:

I had my wife ready with the manual bilge pump and was fully expecting
a scary rush of water to flood in, but at least on the early boats
there's not that much clearance between the 7/8 shaft and the shaft
log. I had just a quick but small flow of water. I remember getting
all ramped up to move fast, but once I saw the water I relaxed and
took my time. My wife was able to easily keep up with the water by
giving the manual a pump or two every few minutes. I think even a
small electric pump could keep up until the batteries die.

I don't have a wheel, so was able to lay over the top of my motor to
reach the stuffing box.

If it were so awkward that there was a chance you couldn't get the
stuffing box cap back on..then I'm not sure I'd try it in the water.
