[Public-List] Spreader Base

Mike and Jason,

Thanks for the info. Looks like I'll use the 4 1/2" SS bolts with nylocks.
Hopefully won't have to worry about spreader falling as I'll do them one
corner at a time. I figure that way there are always at least three points
solidly connected.

Cheers,
Bongo Bob Norway

The same thing happened to me many years ago. I replaced all of the rivets
with thru bolts and have not had a problem since. There is not a compression
tube inside the mast but the mast is very thick just tighten the bolts using
aircraft style SS nuts and you'll be fine. Trim any excess so it won't catch
lines.

I would be careful doing this job while the mast is up. If one of the
spreader bases give way and the lower shrouds become disconnected, the mast
will fall over. It happened this year to one of our members (who will remain
anonymous) here on the Chesapeake.

I own an Alberg 30 #488. I have discovered that two rivets on the starboard
spreader mounting plate have broken and the upper two appear to be pulling
out (there is about a 1/8th inch between the plate and the mast block).

I have two questions: 1. Can I replace the rivets with thru bolts, or should
I re-rivet? 2. Is there a compression tube already in the mast at the
spreaders? I am hoping that I will be able to either thru bolt or re rivet
without taking the mast down as to do that I would have to take her to a
yard and money is tight, whereas I figure I can climb the mast and drill out
the old/bad rivets one at a time and thru-bolt or re-rivet them while at my
slip. Any thoughts/help cheerfully welcomed!

Cheers,
Bongo Bob Norway
