I have a Universal Marine 25 hp. - a great engine that does what ever I need. the newer Universal engines are called Beta. Made and distributed by Kubota. Either the Beta or Volvo will be good enough to move the boat to and from moorage etc. The beta will be much better in a sea way as it produces more needed horsepower and likely will have a much wider and cheaper parts distribution network worldwide. Part of this depends on what the prop is of course... Kubota farm tractors take the same parts as Beta marine engines, far cheaper also! Also to consider how old are the engines and how many hours? The beta might be a newer engine and lower maintenance cost.

However, one is powered by a Volvo Penta 13 HP, the other with a Beta Marine 20 HP. I would be interested in hearing from the seasoned owners who could weigh in on how much power an Alberg 30 requires, and how do these two diesels stack up against each other. I expect to be doing some rigorous sailing and would hate to be wanting in engine capability when needed. Let's assume the relative age, condition, etc, is fairly comparable. Am looking forward to your replies! Thank you
