[Public-List] Public-List Digest, Vol 3090, Issue 1

Rinn Duin has a pushbutton starter and toggle "run" switch on the
panel below the companionway, which I can reach from the tiller. I
like to be able to test the coil from below without cranking, and run
the start motor without starting. I also always close the seawater
through-hull when leaving the boat, and initially start the engine
from below. This keeps me in the habit of examining the engine at
least once per voyage.

I gave up on keyed start switches in the cockpit after replacing them
almost yearly. I had one fail, starting the engine while sailing.

Another failed and burned out the starter motor and fortunately did
not burn the boat! My daughter was below and told me she smelled
toast, which was the paint burning on the starter.

I think the accumulation of dirt, salt and water is too much them,
unless they are well covered.
